Gonaba is a Central African intellectual fresh from Europe and driven by the foolish belief that western curriculum and pedagogy are necessary assets to bring positive change back home to the Central African Republic. Failing to “liberate” his own countrymen on these grounds, he tries the same tactics on the BaAka people of the Congolian rainforests, where he’s confronted with the unavoidable limitations of his supremacist ideologies.
Much of the film was shot in a reconstructed BaAka village-studio near the location of the actual village in which the community that acted in the film resides. It should be noted that though the film features many BaAka actors, it is not itself a work of BaAka cinema but of post-colonial Central African cinema.
