Djxani is a form of sung dance with narrative elements typically staged around a fire, performed by all members of the community. Dances involve choreographed shaking, stomping, and clapping, with dancers often taking on animal characteristics as they depict traditional stories. Every djxani includes an accompanying song that can be repeated indefinitely during the extended performances, while the nǀum kxao occasionally solos overtop.

Among the better known ceremonies featuring djxani is the ǂhoe djxani medicine dance, erroneously called a “trance dance”. While women perform rhythmic clapping and singing to generate nǀum (healing energy), the male healers enter a heightened mental state through intense rhythmic movements and hyperventilation. The ceremony is not only a performance but a therapeutic and spiritual event, often lasting throughout the night.

Other specific forms of djxani include the ǁ’ai djxani (grass dance), typically among the first dances children learn, the n!ang djxani (eland dance) performed at puberty rites, the men’s ǂoah djxani (giraffe dance), and the women’s g!oah djxani (leaf dance).
