There are areítos and zemis for the season of Huracán, singings for the four beings, for the origin of the sun and moon, the ocean and fishes, the snake and jutía, for the guayaba, the ceiba, the corn, the name, and the yuca. The staple crop yuca is the most special gift and singularly represented by Yúcahu, supreme being and son of the ancestral mother Atabey (pictured).
The earliest record of Taíno religion survives in written form thanks to the work of Guatíbanacú, a Nuhuirey man who spoke both the Macoríx and Taíno languages and in 1495 learned Spanish, through which he communicated to a Catalan friar the Taíno faith traditions dominating the spiritual landscape of the Greater Antilles in the text Relación acerca de las antigüedades de los indios.
