Yuraq is the Yup’ik word for a style of narrative dance and song performed in southwestern Alaska and used for storytelling, communicating traditions, and as a form of prayer. Performances typically involve singing in the Yup’ik language, drumming, and specific dance movements choreographed to the songs.

Yuraq performances often feature men in the front, kneeling, and women in the back, standing. Singers use the Yup’ik language to tell stories, and dancers follow the rhythm of the drums, incorporating specific movements.

The tradition is preserved through groups like Kassiglurmiut Yurartait, who hold the annual Cama’i Dance Festival featuring local and regional yuraq performances alongside national and international dance groups.
