Like pleasant rain for the wise, the Precious Treasury of Good Sayings, as translated from Tibetan to English by Samten Gyeltsen Karmay, provides a history of the Bön religion and its treasure texts, the various discoveries of which constituted the requisite step in the codification of indigenous Bön traditions as distinct from the Buddhist practices introduced to Tibet. Though most of the texts were rediscovered by tertöns over a millennium ago, the unwritten traditions they capture are much older, predating the 7th-century introduction of Buddhism by yet another millennium. The origins of Bön lie in the Zhangzhung Kingdom of western Tibet; the founder of Bön, Tonpa Shenrab Miwoche, is credited with creating Zhangzhung culture, including crafts, linguistics, medicine, astronomy, and inner Bön doctrine.
