Mongolian shamanism, or Böö Mörgöl, contains many features common to the religious systems of the surrounding regions, including the Tungusic šamanism (also) of Inner Asia, the Turkic Tengrism of Central Asia, and the Tibetan Buddhism of Highland Asia. Distinctions are drawn between two or three primary varieties of Böö Mörgöl: yellow shamanism, named for the yellow hats of the Gelug school buddhists whose influence is yellow shamanism’s dominant feature; black shamanism, which is largely void of buddhist influence; and sometimes white shamanism, whose practitioners place greater emphasis on the worship of tenger sky deities. The Darkhad of northern Mongolia, shielded by the rugged surroundings of the remote Darkhad valley, have a reputation in Ulaanbaatar for their numinous powers as practitioners of the most traditional black shamanism.
