The Manchu term for shamanistic song is angga gisun, usually sung while dancing and accompanied by percussion instruments, thus making it a total performing art that integrates music, dance, and poetry.
The transmission of Manchu shamanistic songs is accomplished through both Uyun, ritualized instruction through performance, and copies of shamanistic books called enduri bit’he handed down to each successive generation.
Apprentices who attend the Uyun class learn to sing shamanistic songs in addition to learning to dance and conduct sacrificial procedures. The teacher of the Uyun may be the mukūn (clan leader) or a Sakda Saman (old shaman). It is the leader’s responsibility to teach angga gisun to the apprentices and see that they have mastered them.
The Uyun actually amounts to a folk school for teaching Manchu culture and conducting popular education. Such schools are in session until students master the songs, perhaps two to three months, and may open (as needed) every one to three years.
