In Nirat hariphunchai, written around 1517 in Northern Thailand, the narrator makes a pilgrimage to the great Buddhist reliquary at Lamphun to show his devotion to a lover and his religion. The genre nirat is a type of khlong (poetic verse) involving travel and longing for a separated lover, and Hariphunchai was an ancient kingdom centered on Lamphun in the Northern Thai kingdom of Lan Na.
MUEANG KAEO, the author of Nirat hariphunchai as proposed by Winai Pongsripian, was king of Chiang Mai, the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, at the start of the 16th century. Si Thip, the subject of the poem, is presumed to be his primary queen consort.
