Kesawaga, also known as Kiriwina ballet or folk opera, is a form of musical dance drama developed by the Raun Raun Theatre in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, with Trobriand poet John Kasaipwalova, based on the Daio dances of the Morema villages on Fergusson Island in Milne Bay Province.
The company is made up of four dancers, four drummers, and a katunenia, a smaller drum with a different voice, alongside an ensemble of performers in traditional costumes. The stories featured in the kesawagas are all drawn from traditional narratives.
The Raun Raun Theatre was founded on advancing a new kind of theatre reflecting the problems and interests of contemporary village life contrasted against nascent Papuan national identity. The landmark Niugini, Niugini trilogy of folk operas, from which an excerpt of Sail the Midnight Sun is included, epitomizes this mission.
The Raun Raun traveling company continues to tour their folk operas throughout the region as the National Performing Art Troupe of Papua New Guinea based in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province.
