Though Next Goal Wins doesn’t qualify as a cultural feature film—⁠—both despite and because of its lampooning and unavoidable perpetuation of the white savior trope, as well as its mostly non-Polynesian creative team—⁠—its hilariously heartwarming and culturally didactic storytelling pushed the movie above the threshold of inclusion as an alternate.
